OUR STORY

About The BEAN BAG

The BEAN BAG was founded by our parents – both of whom always gravitated toward food, groceries, coffee, tea and anything that brought people together. While on vacation in Maine in 1976, they visited a local store that seemed like the ideal gathering place. After taking some time to think about and dream about the changes they would make and what they would serve, this little store inspired them to create a venue of their own in the DC area.

Thus, the BEAN BAG opened in 1977. Throughout the years we’ve had several locations – DC, Bethesda, Silver Spring and Rockville. The BEAN BAG was always a family affair. While our mom and dad started it, other family members – brothers and sisters – have worked after school, on vacation and finally as owners.

A Family Legacy

Dad passed away in 1986. Mom retired in 2003. All the while, our family has been committed to good food and good people. Our commitment has been real. If you were a customer during the Derecho in 2012, you know that we worked tirelessly to stay open – despite a multiple day power outage. We felt compelled to be there for our customers. At the time we were in Bethesda. Next door to the Giant.

And with their permission, we hooked up to their generator and started a hot plate. It was important to boil water so we could serve coffee to our customers! Serving our clientele is most important to us! Just ask Mitchell. He never says no! He’s always full of ideas. And Robin keeps things running smoothly. We believe in going the extra mile for our customers—no matter the circumstances. A perfect example? The Derecho storm in 2012.

During a multiple-day power outage, we knew our community needed us. At the time, we were in Bethesda, right next to Giant. With their permission, we connected to their generator and set up a hot plate—just so we could boil water and serve coffee to our loyal customers!
